Hamburg, 24.02.2021: In the last 20 years, the expansion of renewable energies has succeeded. Their share in today’s electricity generation mix is around 50 percent. This is a remarkable success. However, the heat and mobility turnarounds are still in their infancy. In the “second half” of the energy transition from 2020 to 2050, it is therefore time to bring together the electricity transition, the heat transition and the mobility transition into an integrated, genuine energy transition.
HH2e AG stands for a system of renewable electricity, hydrogen and energy storage. Together with Uniper SE and Siemens Energy AG, the next stage of the energy transition is to be initiated at the Hamburg-Moorburg power plant site in an iconographic power plant of the future that will supply industry and the people of Hamburg with green energy around the clock.

A high-temperature storage system, an electrolyser and an innovative gas turbine are three main components of the iconographic power plant of the future:
These innovative technologies make it possible to store large amounts of wind power as high-temperature heat and provide it on demand. Renewable energies are integrated into the heat sector in this way on a large industrial scale. Part of the stored energy is supplied to Hamburg’s industry as process steam. Another part can be converted into oxygen and hydrogen by a new innovative electrolysis technology.
This makes it possible to supply large quantities of green hydrogen directly to industry and other customers, e.g. in the mobility sector. In the long term, this will make it possible to meet the hydrogen needs of Hamburg’s energy-intensive industry completely without emissions.
On the other hand, green hydrogen will be converted into climate-friendly electricity and green district heating with the help of a low-NOx, highly efficient gas turbine, thus enabling a climate-neutral public energy supply for commercial enterprises, households and public institutions in Hamburg.

A hydrogen trading platform in Hamburg sets standards for future H2 trading:
The development of an integrated energy system is to be accompanied by the creation of a hydrogen trading platform, which will become an international marketplace for the physical and balance-sheet trading of hydrogen, but also of other power-to-X energy carriers derived from green hydrogen, such as ammonia, methanol or synthetic fuels. This platform is to become an important contribution to the development of a regionally, nationally and globally networked hydrogen economy, of which Hamburg will be an important power centre.
Together with other project partners, HH2e AG has submitted a detailed project outline to the Expression of Interest in the so-called EU Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) on 19 February 2021. The Hamburg Senate expressly supports the efforts of the companies to make Hamburg a hydrogen location.
However, the iconographic future power plant should not remain a purely business enterprise initiative. Rather, the energy turnaround requires the direct participation of as many Hamburg residents as possible and numerous social actors in the Free and Hanseatic City. The initiators of the project therefore want to enter into an intensive dialogue with the citizens and numerous stakeholders in Hamburg as soon as possible.
